Does a Shopify App Free Trial Charge You? How App Billing Actually Works

The screen that worries people is the approval page. Shopify shows you a subscription with a price on it before the trial starts, and it reads like you are about to be charged today. You are not — but the wording does nothing to reassure you, and it is the point where a lot of merchants back out.

Here is what each step actually does.

What the approval screen is for

When an app starts a paid plan, it cannot charge you directly. It asks Shopify to create a subscription, and Shopify shows you a confirmation page with the price, the interval and the trial length. Approving it does two things:

Nothing is billed at that moment. If the app requested a 14-day trial, the first charge lands on day 15.

The reason it feels alarming is that the price is the biggest thing on the page and the trial length is not. That is Shopify's screen, not the app's — no app can change its wording.

Where the money actually appears

App charges are not billed to your card the instant they fall due. They are added to your Shopify bill and collected on your store's own billing cycle, along with your Shopify subscription and anything else you have.

Two consequences worth knowing:

If you are trying to work out what you are paying for apps, the place to look is Settings → Billing in your Shopify admin, not your bank statement.

Cancelling before the trial ends

Cancel from inside the app if it offers a button, or from Settings → Apps and sales channels by removing the app. Either works. Removing the app cancels the subscription.

Three things merchants get caught by:

Uninstalling does cancel the charge. You do not need to cancel separately first. If you delete the app during a trial, no charge follows.

Cancelling mid-cycle on a paid plan does not usually refund. You generally keep access to the end of the period you have paid for. That is standard, not a trick.

The trial does not restart. If you install, trial, cancel, and reinstall the same app later, most apps will not grant a second trial — Shopify does not deduplicate this for them, so apps track it themselves. Ours records it against the shop and does not offer a second one.

How to check what you are actually signed up for

Settings → Billing → Subscriptions in your Shopify admin lists every active app charge, its price, and its next billing date. That is the authoritative list. If an app is not there, it is not charging you, whatever its own interface says.

This is worth doing once a quarter. App subscriptions are the easiest recurring cost to lose track of, precisely because they are bundled into one Shopify invoice rather than appearing individually on a card.

"Free plan" and "free trial" are not the same thing

Used interchangeably in marketing, and they behave completely differently:

If a listing says "free trial available", expect the approval screen. If it says "free plan available", you should be able to use something without one.

For what it is worth, we do both: one finished ad free with no approval screen at all, and a genuine 14-day trial on the paid plans if you want more.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be charged if I uninstall during the free trial?

No. Uninstalling cancels the subscription, and a trial that never completed produces no charge.

Why did the app ask me to approve a charge before letting me use it?

Because Shopify requires the subscription to be approved before the trial can start — the app cannot begin a trial without it. It is worth asking whether a tool lets you see any output before that screen, because many do not.

Where do I see my app charges?

Settings → Billing → Subscriptions in your Shopify admin. That list is authoritative.

Why is the charge date different from when the money left my account?

App charges are added to your Shopify bill and collected on your store's own billing cycle, which can be up to a month later.

Can I get a refund if I forget to cancel?

That is between you and the app developer — Shopify does not refund app charges automatically. Most small developers will refund a genuine "forgot to cancel, never used it", because the alternative is a bad review. Ask.

Does a free trial mean the app has my card details?

No. The app never sees your payment details at any point. Shopify handles billing and the app is only told whether a subscription is active.
